Biography

Madhu Krishnan is a Professor of African and World Comparative Literatures at the University of Bristol. She has been involved with the university since 2013, initially serving as a Lecturer in Postcolonial Writing and later promoted to Senior Lecturer and then Professor in 2019. Her research primarily explores contemporary African writing in a transnational context, focusing on how literary works contribute to and subvert the perception of Africa within the global literary landscape. She has authored three monographs, including "Contemporary African Literature in English: Global Locations" and "Contingent Canons: African Literature and the Politics of Location." Currently, she is the principal investigator on a five-year project titled 'Literary Activism in Sub-Saharan Africa,' funded by the European Research Commission. This project stemmed from her extensive collaborative work with literary collectives across various African nations and involves literary translation, creative writing workshops, and digital storytelling. Krishnan has also served as the Director of the Centre for the Study of Colonial and Postcolonial Societies and is actively engaged in initiatives focused on anti-racism and decolonial pedagogy. She welcomes student applications in the area of African literary studies and is particularly interested in projects that challenge traditional postcolonial critiques.
