Magdalena B. Flak is a Lecturer in Mucosal Immunology and a King’s Prize Fellow at the Centre for Host-Microbiome Interactions. Her research investigates the effects of host-pathobiont interactions and the resolution mechanisms of chronic inflammatory diseases. She obtained her BSc and MSc from Albert-Ludwigs-University of Freiburg and the Max Planck Institute of Immunobiology and Epigenetics. For her PhD, she worked under the guidance of Professor Iain McNeish at Barts Cancer Institute, Queen Mary University of London (QMUL), where she dissected the interactions of host cells with oncolytic adenoviruses to improve the efficacy of viral gene therapy and identify potential ovarian cancer biomarkers. In 2010, she joined Professor Richard Blumberg's laboratory at Harvard Medical School and Brigham Women’s Hospital in Boston to study how host microbiota affect health and disease, particularly in inflammatory bowel disease. After returning to London in 2015, she worked as a research fellow at the William Harvey Research Institute, QMUL, awarded a Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions Individual Fellowship. During this time, her research focused on the link between rheumatoid arthritis and periodontal disease using models of inflammatory arthritis in patients diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis.
