Biography

Magdalena Osburn is an Associate Professor and Seminar Director in the Department of Earth, Environmental, and Planetary Sciences at Northwestern University. She holds a Ph.D. in Geobiology and has completed both her M.S. and B.A. in Geobiology and Earth & Planetary Sciences from the California Institute of Technology and Washington University in St. Louis, respectively. Her research focuses on understanding how biological molecules record information about the formation environment in which organisms produce and use molecules known as lipids. The study of lipids is critical in understanding the habits of both modern and ancient microbes, as they are highly informative indicators of specific biological groups. Her work employs a range of tools, including organic geochemistry and microbiology, and investigates biogeochemical cycling in both modern and ancient environments. Osburn's research also addresses geochemical modeling of aqueous environments to explore microbial life dynamics and examines the chemical evolution of ocean-atmosphere systems during the Neoproterozoic era. Additionally, she teaches courses related to sedimentary geology and geobiology and has published extensively on these topics.
