Maggie Borowitz studies modern contemporary Latin American art. Her research focuses on the relationship between art and politics in the late twentieth century, with a special emphasis on feminist practices in Mexico. She teaches courses that explore art and architecture in Latin America from the pre-colonial period to the present, engaging with theories of feminism, gender, and sexuality. Dr. Borowitz is currently working on a book manuscript entitled “Magali Lara: Feminist Artistic Tactics in Mexican 1980s,” which explores the drawings, prints, and paintings of Magali Lara (b. Mexico City, 1956). Lara’s practice emerged during an era characterized by ecological and economic crises, neoliberal reforms, and a deep distrust of the Mexican State, alongside the rise of Frida Kahlo's cult status. The project interrogates what it meant to be a woman artist in Mexico during the 1980s. Dr. Borowitz’s research has been supported by the Franke Institute for the Humanities, the Mellon Foundation, and the Fulbright-Hays Doctoral Dissertation Research Abroad Fellowship. Her writing has been published in ARTMargins and Art Journal.
