Dr. Maggie Dwyer

Biography

Maggie Dwyer is a Senior Lecturer in African Studies and International Development at the University of Edinburgh's School of Social and Political Science. Her research focuses on themes of conflict, security, and politics in Africa, particularly exploring the role of African militaries in international security interventions. Dwyer's background includes field research in countries such as Sierra Leone, Burkina Faso, Gambia, Liberia, Tanzania, and Kenya. She led the ESRC-funded project 'Return Peacekeeping: Mission Effects Veterans, States, Communities,' which involved comparative analyses of peacekeeper deployments in Ghana, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Nigeria, and Gambia. Dwyer has published extensively on military issues in Africa, including her monograph 'Soldiers Revolt: Army Mutinies in Africa' and various peer-reviewed articles on topics relating to peacekeeping, military dynamics, and African politics. In addition to her academic work, she has experience consulting for various government agencies and international organizations, including the U.S. Department of Defense. Dwyer holds a PhD in African Studies from the University of Edinburgh, along with an MSc from Syracuse University and a BS in Political Science and Psychology from the University of Mary Washington.
