Dr. Maggie Gale

Biography

Maggie Gale is a Professor of Drama at the University of Manchester, where she has been part of the faculty since 2005. She served as the Head of Drama from 2010 to 2014. Gale's research primarily focuses on the historical aspects of British performance cultures from 1900 to 1939, exploring themes of citizenship, surveillance, and the bodies involved in performance. Her notable publications include the monograph 'Social History of British Performance Cultures 1900-1939' published by Routledge, along with significant edited collections on female playwrights and theatre workers. She is also the co-editor of 'Contemporary Theatre Review' and has been active in various research projects examining melodrama, modernism, and feminism in relation to performance. Gale plays a vital role in the academic community as a founder member of the Theatre Performance Research Association and has contributed to several research councils in the UK.
