Biography

Maggie Low is an Assistant Professor and Co-Chair of the Indigenous Community Planning (ICP) program at the School of Community and Regional Planning (SCARP) at the University of British Columbia (UBC). She obtained a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science from the University of Guelph, a Master of Arts in Environmental Studies from the University of Victoria, and a PhD in Resource Management and Environmental Studies from UBC. As a community-engaged scholar of mixed ancestry, Maggie focuses on advancing the understanding of Indigenous sovereignty as expressed in Canadian courts, emphasizing the implications for Indigenous communities' well-being. Her current research projects and teaching efforts concentrate on Indigenous community planning, well-being, knowledge systems, climate change, and decolonization efforts in Canadian cities. She is actively involved in educational courses such as PLAN 501, part of the Masters of Community and Regional Planning program, which examines the relationships between planning and reconciliation in Canadian cities. Through her work, Maggie seeks to highlight the strengths and strategies of Indigenous Nations as they assert their authority over their territories.
