Dr. Magnus Sundbom

Biography

Magnus Sundbom is a professor in the Department of Surgical Sciences at Uppsala University. He specializes in surgery, particularly focusing on diseases of the esophagus and stomach. His research includes randomized clinical studies, specialized physiological analyses, and larger national registry studies aimed at enhancing knowledge about surgical procedures to improve healthcare outcomes. Sundbom has published over 200 scientific articles, with his research results positively influencing daily healthcare practices. In 1995, he became a specialist in surgery and later assumed the role of senior physician at Uppsala University Hospital in 2008. He has held positions as an Associate Professor of Surgery since 2007 and as an Adjunct Professor of Surgery from 2013 to 2025. He has been recognized as an Excellent Teacher in 2019. Sundbom's research includes investigating physiological changes following bariatric surgery and optimizing surgical techniques to enhance long-term patient satisfaction. He is particularly interested in advanced obesity procedures, such as the Duodenal switch, and strives to improve surgical outcomes for cancer conditions, along with participating in basic scientific studies to understand the causal mechanisms of gastrointestinal diseases.
