Biography

Dr. Mahavir Agarwal is an Associate Professor and Clinician Investigator in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Toronto. He completed his medical degree (MBBS) at JIPMER, Pondicherry, and residency in psychiatry at the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS), Bangalore. He holds a PhD with a focus on multi-modality imaging and neural plasticity in schizophrenia. His research interests include understanding metabolic health and cognition in schizophrenia, particularly the effects of antipsychotics on cognitive and metabolic dysfunctions. He has over five years of experience in helping individuals with mental illness achieve better physical and mental health and has published around 50 peer-reviewed articles in prestigious journals. Dr. Agarwal has been recognized with several awards, including the Discovery Fund Postdoctoral Fellowship and the Hughes Postdoctoral Fellowship. His current research investigates neural correlates of antipsychotic-induced insulin resistance and the implications for cognitive function. Dr. Agarwal also works at the Mental Health Metabolic Clinic and the Clozapine Clinics at CAMH, applying pharmacological interventions to improve outcomes for individuals with severe mental illness.
