Biography

Mahjabeen Khan completed her PhD in Microbiology and Molecular Biology from the University of New South Wales (UNSW). She was awarded the prestigious Brian Kirby Award for research excellence due to her impactful research publications. Her doctoral research, which commenced in 2017, focused on Pseudomonas aeruginosa, a bacterium known to cause eye infections in humans. Key findings involved understanding the clonal relationship of recent historical isolates and the resistance genes acquired by recent isolates leading to novel eye infections. Currently, she is a visiting Research Fellow at the School of Optometry and Vision Science (SOVS) at UNSW, engaging in industry collaborative projects aimed at developing novel disinfection systems, with recent findings related to UV-based disinfection published in the Journal Hygiene. Additionally, she is involved in projects centered on genome sequencing of ocular bacteria and investigating the ocular microbiome changes due to mask-wearing.
