Biography

Mahmoud Haddara obtained his honors bachelor degree in mechanical engineering from Ain Shams University, Egypt in 1963. He completed his M.Sc. and PhD in naval architecture at the University of California, Berkeley. Following his doctorate, he worked as a postdoctoral fellow at Berkeley before returning to Egypt to work for the Suez Canal Authority Port Said Shipyard. In 1980, he moved to Kuwait to work at the Kuwait Institute of Technology, where he established the Marine Division in the Department of Mechanical Technology. Haddara served as head of the Department of Mechanical Technology from 1981 to 1983 and as Assistant Director of Academic Affairs from 1983 to 1986. He joined Memorial University of Newfoundland in 1986, teaching naval mechanical disciplines and chairing the Ocean Naval Architectural Engineering discipline from 1993 to 1998. In 1998, he became the Associate Dean of Graduate Studies and served as Acting Dean from April to October 2000 and Interim Dean from July 2002 to October 2003. Throughout his career, he has acted as a scientific adviser and worked on numerous research projects related to ocean naval architectural engineering, focusing on developing optimal maintenance policies and monitoring systems for large engineering systems.
