Biography

Maho Niwa received his Master’s degree in Chemistry from Brandeis University and his Ph.D. in Biochemistry from Baylor College of Medicine. He was a Jane Coffin Childs Cancer postdoctoral fellow in Dr. Peter Walter's laboratory at UCSF. His research focuses on understanding the roles and mechanisms of the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) in cellular stress responses and cell cycle regulation. He is particularly interested in how cells adjust their ER function in response to various stresses, which are critical for maintaining cellular health and function. His laboratory is exploring the Unfolded Protein Response (UPR) and its role in cancer cell survival under stress conditions, as well as characterizing a newly discovered cell cycle checkpoint known as the ER Stress Surveillance pathway (ERSU). Through these studies, Maho aims to develop new methods for addressing human diseases associated with ER dysfunction.
