Dr. Mai Pho

Biography

Mai Tuyet Pho is an infectious diseases physician and an Associate Professor in the Section of Infectious Diseases and Global Health at the University of Chicago. She serves as the Director of Health Policy Research at the Chicago Center for HIV Elimination. Her work aims to improve health outcomes through public policy at the intersection of HIV, HCV, and substance use. Dr. Pho's current research leverages implementation science to test interventions that expand public health strategies to support the health of people who use drugs, with a special emphasis on rural communities and individuals involved with the criminal legal system. Her efforts have received support from several prestigious organizations including the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, the National Institutes of Health, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Dr. Pho has previously served as the interim Chief Medical Officer at the Illinois Department of Public Health and has acted as a Medical Advisor for Healthcare Policy and Research. Throughout her career, she has led critical initiatives aimed at addressing the opioid epidemic and HCV surveillance, as well as overdose prevention education and safe prescribing practices. A committed mentor, Dr. Pho actively teaches medical students and fellows interested in public health and health economics. She is involved in various research projects, demonstrating her ongoing dedication to enhancing public health policy and practice.
