Dr. Maia Chankseliani

Biography

Maia Chankseliani is a Professor of Comparative International Education at the University of Oxford, leading the Comparative and International Education Research Group and serving as a Governing Body Fellow of St Edmund Hall. Her research explores the public role of tertiary education in diverse settings, examining how universities contribute to social, economic, and political development, and how international engagement shapes institutions and societies. Her monograph, 'What Happened to the Soviet University?' published by Oxford University Press in 2022, offers insights into the Soviet context, shedding light on contemporary global debates regarding academic freedom, institutional autonomy, and the changing nature of state-university relations. Chankseliani has completed a major international study on international mobility and its contribution to societal development. Her work on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in higher education remains widely cited in the field. She engages with governments and multilateral institutions and has held editorial leadership roles in academic journals, focusing on global representation and intellectual diversity. Chankseliani was born and raised in Georgia and holds degrees from Tbilisi State University, the University of Warwick, Harvard University, and the University of Cambridge.
