Biography

Maia King is a Lecturer in the Department of Political Economy at King’s College London. She joined King’s in 2020 after completing her PhD in Economics at Queen Mary, University of London in 2017. Prior to her current position, she worked as a researcher and consultant at the Overseas Development Institute and served as an ODI Fellow in Liberia and Madagascar. Her primary research interests are in economics, governance, institutions, social networks, public finance, budgeting, and climate policy, particularly related to forest governance. She has co-authored a book that examines public expenditure control for HM Treasury, which won the MacKenzie Book Prize in 2025. Dr. King is currently involved in various research projects that explore the intersection of institutions and power in forest governance and promote locally led approaches to foreign aid. Additionally, she is interested in PhD supervision in economics with a focus on political economy and governance institutions.
