Biography

Maia Ponsonnet is an Adjunct Research Fellow at the University of Western Australia's Linguistics Discipline, within the School of Social Sciences. She transitioned to her adjunct role after serving as a Senior Lecturer at UWA from 2017 to 2021. In early 2022, she joined the French Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique in Lyon, focusing on the dynamics of language. Between 2019 and 2020, Maia served as the Chair of the Linguistics Discipline and was the School Graduate Research Coordinator from 2020 to 2021. She earned her PhD in Linguistics from the Australian National University and has held post-doctoral positions, including a 2-year role at CNRS alongside winning the Australian Research Council DECRA Fellowship in 2016. Maia has extensive experience conducting linguistic ethnographic research on Australia's Indigenous languages, particularly in the central and western Arnhem Land regions. She investigates how language conveys emotions and the cultural ties that influence this expressivity, contributing significant findings on the semantics and typology of languages like Dalabon, Rembarrnga, and various Bininj Kun-wok dialects.
