Maikel Wijtmans is an Associate Professor in the field of Synthetic Medicinal Chemistry at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. Upon returning to the Netherlands, he joined the Division of Medicinal Chemistry as a postdoctoral fellow. Over the years, his research has involved the design and synthesis of compounds within biological contexts. He has participated in numerous projects, including developing histamine-receptor ligands and studying derivatization reagents using ESI-MS techniques. From 2009 to 2023, he held the position of Assistant and then Associate Professor. His current research interests are focused on drug discovery and photopharmacology, particularly in relation to G-protein coupled receptors. He has received several awards for his contributions to educational innovation, including the Dutch national KNCV chemistry teaching award and the 2019 KnowVU Audience Award.
