Biography

Maiken Mikkelsen is a Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Duke University. Her research focuses on nanophotonics and new quantum materials, aiming to enable transformative breakthroughs in optoelectronics, quantum science, the environment, and human health. She received her B.S. in Physics from the University of Copenhagen in 2004 and completed her Ph.D. in Physics at the University of California, Santa Barbara in 2009. Following her doctorate, she was a postdoctoral fellow at the University of California, Berkeley. Mikkelsen joined Duke University in 2012. Throughout her career, she has received multiple awards for her contributions to the field, including the Maria Goeppert Mayer Award from the American Physical Society and the National Science Foundation CAREER Award. Additionally, she has been recognized by the Gordon Betty Moore Foundation as a Moore Inventor Fellow. Her work is characterized by a commitment to advancing the fundamental understanding of light-matter interactions and exploring how artificially structured nanoscale materials and hybrid molecular-scale materials can lead to significant advancements in various scientific domains.
