Maj Schneider Thomsen is an Associate Professor specializing in Neurobiology at Aalborg University. His research focuses on drug delivery to the brain, particularly in the context of neurodegenerative diseases and the challenges posed by the blood-brain barrier (BBB). His work encompasses cellular neuroscience, vascular biology, and nanomedicine, aiming to understand how to modulate the BBB for effective treatment of conditions like Alzheimer's disease. Thomsen's research delves into iron metabolism and its relationship with chronic neurodegeneration, investigating how iron accumulation and dysregulation affect inflammation and BBB integrity. He employs state-of-the-art vitro BBB models alongside in vivo analysis in both normal and Alzheimer's disease mouse models. In addition to his research, Thomsen is actively involved in teaching within the Medicine Industrial Specialization (MedIS) programs, coordinating courses and supervising numerous student projects and theses. He is a co-supervisor for two PhD students focused on targeted drug delivery and viral gene therapy strategies for neuroinflammation. His educational qualifications include a PhD in vascular integrity of the brain and participation in a pedagogical training program.
