Biography

Maki Kimura is an Associate Professor (Teaching) in the Department of Political Science at University College London. Her research focuses on gender and race inequality, colonialism, militarism, and the memories of wars and memorials. She is the author of the book 'Unfolding ‘Comfort Women’ Debates: Modernity, Violence Women’s Voices' published by Palgrave Macmillan in 2016, and has contributed to several book chapters addressing topics such as sexual slavery and the politics of war memorials. Maki has been an active member of the UCL Race Equality Steering Group for over ten years and currently acts as the staff lead for the Ethnic Race Equality Network within her department, advocating for race equity from an intersectional perspective. In her role as the Deputy Head of Undergraduate Academic Support for Student Welfare, she provides pastoral support to undergraduate students. Additionally, Maki is heavily involved in feminist peace activism and community projects aimed at tackling food insecurity and promoting sustainability through community gardens.
