Biography

Malama Chisanga is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemistry at Dalhousie University. He completed his PhD at the University of Manchester in 2020 and has since held postdoctoral research positions at the University of Liverpool and Université de Montréal. His research focuses on analytical chemistry, particularly studying plasmonic nanomaterials and their applications in optical sensing and diagnostics. Chisanga is dedicated to developing low-cost nanosensors and advanced optical diagnostics that address pressing health and environmental needs, especially in low-resource settings. His work combines chemistry, engineering, biology, and data science to improve disease diagnostics and therapeutic monitoring through the manipulation of light-matter interactions at the nanoscale. Chisanga’s innovative approach integrates machine learning and chemometrics to facilitate the interpretation of extensive spectral data from nanosensors, making complex data accessible to a broader audience. He has received multiple awards, including the Society Applied Spectroscopy Early Career Grant and various travel bursaries from the Royal Society of Chemistry.
