Dr. Malcolm West

Biography

Malcolm trained as an undergraduate at the University of Malta, graduating in 2005. He completed his surgical training in Northwest Merseyside. His research focuses on prehabilitation, exercise physiology, and perioperative surgical risk stratification, which he pursued during his PhD under esteemed professors in the field. Malcolm has been at the forefront of studies related to prehabilitation in surgical patients, particularly those with advanced rectal cancer. He has held prestigious positions, including NIHR academic clinical fellow and clinical lecturer. His innovative approaches in assessing surgical risk through Cardio-Pulmonary Exercise Testing have garnered recognition, including awards from the British Journal of Surgery. Malcolm has significantly contributed to international research initiatives aimed at improving cancer surgery outcomes, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. He currently serves as an associate professor and leads research programs at the University of Southampton, and he is involved in supervising various academic programs. Malcolm is committed to enhancing educational frameworks in surgical training and actively participates in advanced surgical projects with an emphasis on patient-centered outcomes.
