Malcolm Whitman received his doctorate from Harvard University in 1985, where he worked on phosphatidylinositol kinases under the guidance of Lew Cantley. Following his doctoral research, he completed postdoctoral studies with Doug Melton, focusing on signaling during embryogenesis. In 1992, he joined the faculty of Cell Biology at Harvard Medical School and has since made significant contributions to the field. In 2007, he was appointed as a Professor of Developmental Biology at the Harvard School of Dental Medicine. His lab investigates the signals that transduce highly specific biological responses during embryogenesis, as well as the physiological responses of organisms to stress and damage, and the development of disease pathologies.
