Biography

Malene Breunig is an Associate Professor at the University of Southern Denmark, specializing in Danish/Nordic aesthetics and cultural history. Her research encompasses a wide range of expressive forms, particularly literature, visual arts, design, and architecture. Breunig has primarily focused on topics from the Modern Breakthrough period to the present, with particular emphasis on the years 1925-1970. Her work examines the welfare ideals of the Nordic countries and their manifestation through critical debate literature, literary fiction, housing architecture, and interior design. Currently, she is involved in the project 'In the Shadow of War: Denmark, the Nordic Region, and the Return of Geopolitics,' where she explores ideas of 'soft power' and cultural preparedness, grounded in historical perceptions of the Nordic region as a peace area. Breunig has been a faculty member at the Institute of Literature, Culture, and Media at SDU since 2011, initially joining in 2007 as an Assistant Professor. She completed her PhD on Danish literature and visual arts around the year 1900 at SDU in 2007, having studied there from 2002 to 2006.
