Dr. Malika Jeffries El

Biography

Professor Malika Jeffries-EL’s research interests include the synthesis of novel heterocycles, conjugated polymers (CPs), and organic semiconductors. Her focus is on investigating structure-property relationships in these systems, emphasizing the development of CPs due to their technological importance across various areas, including energy (solar cells), displays (light emitting diodes), electronics (field effect transistors), and life sciences (sensors). Organic electronics involve the development of intrinsically (semi)conductive organic molecules, oligomers, and polymers, which contrast with conventional electronics that primarily utilize inorganic-based materials such as silicon, germanium, and Gallium Arsenide (GaAs). Organic semiconductors provide significant advantages over inorganic materials, particularly in terms of flexibility, lightweight applications, and potential for lower production costs.
