Dr. Malin Kylander

Biography

Malin Kylander is an Associate Professor at Stockholm University specializing in sediment geochemistry. Her research primarily focuses on analytical chemistry and environmental geochemistry, particularly on inorganic chemistry, lake sediments, and peat. Kylander is involved in various outreach projects aimed at engaging high school students in research, encouraging them to participate actively in data collection. Her current projects include reconstructing storminess in the eastern North Atlantic during the Holocene, examining changes in species distributions in boreal peatlands, and investigating Holocene atmospheric mineral dust deposition in raised peat bogs in south-central Sweden. Additionally, she studies hydroclimatic variations from glacial to historical periods in eastern Lesotho. Kylander is also responsible for the S:LAM Lab and manages the ITRAX XRF core scanner, enabling high-resolution, non-destructive analyses of lake and marine sediments. She is actively working on developing novel sample preparation methods to broaden applications of XRF analyses in her lab and has a keen interest in gender issues within science. She has authored articles in the online journal Angle and the Stockholm University magazine UniversitetsNytt, discussing the challenges faced by women in male-dominated research fields.
