Mangesh Thorat graduated from B.J. Medical College, Pune University in 1999 and completed his master's in surgery at Mumbai University, followed by DNB surgery at the National Board of Examinations in New Delhi, India. He underwent surgical oncology residency and breast surgery specialist training at the Tata Memorial Hospital in Mumbai, India. Mangesh holds a Fellow European Board of Surgery (FEBS - Breast Surgery) certification. In 2006, he moved to Indiana University School of Medicine in the USA to conduct research on breast cancer biomarkers. He joined the Centre for Cancer Prevention at the Wolfson Institute of Preventive Medicine in London in 2009, continuing his work on breast cancer biomarkers with a specific focus on Ductal Carcinoma In Situ (DCIS). His research aims to identify biomarkers to differentiate DCIS that recurs from those that progress to invasive breast cancer, ultimately allowing most DCIS patients to avoid unnecessary adjuvant treatments. Mangesh was awarded his PhD from the University of London in January 2016. His research interests include cancer epidemiology and prevention, particularly the role of aspirin in cancer prevention, prognostic biomarkers for prostate cancer, and clinical trials for breast cancer. Mangesh has received several awards including the ASCO Merit Award, Wellcome Trust Value in People Award, and the SABCS Clinical Scholar Award. He is actively involved in various scientific committees and serves as a Senior Editor for the International Journal of Surgery.
