Biography

Mani Larijani is a professor and Shrum Chair in the Department of Molecular Biology and Biochemistry at Simon Fraser University. His research focuses on understanding the biological mechanisms of disease through the study of DNA/RNA mutation processes that can change genetic codes. His lab investigates how these mutating processes affect human health and diseases and their evolutionary significance in non-human species. Larijani’s work integrates various interdisciplinary methodologies, including biochemistry, structural biology, molecular and cellular biology, evolutionary biology, and computational biology. He has made significant contributions to understanding how mutant genetic codes impact diverse biological functions such as immune response modulation, cancer exacerbation, and tissue differentiation. Larijani obtained his Bachelor of Science degree with Honours in Immunology and a minor in Microbiology from the University of Toronto. He later completed his Ph.D. in Immunology at both the University of Toronto and Harvard University. His selected publications include important findings in the fields of immunology and molecular genetics.
