Dr. Manuel Arroyo Kalin

Biography

Manuel Arroyo-Kalin is an Associate Professor in Geoarchaeology at University College London's Institute of Archaeology. He leads the EarthLab research group and heads the Geoarchaeology Lab, focusing on the Anthropocene, Human Niche Construction, and Historical Ecology. His primary research investigates the pre-Colonial human landscape history of tropical lowland South America, particularly the Amazon basin. He employs earth science approaches and soil micromorphological analysis to study past anthropogenic landscape modifications and anthropogenic soil formation. With a background in archaeology and archaeological science, Arroyo-Kalin has published extensively on archaeology and palaeodemography in the Amazon basin, coordinating the British Academy-funded PARINÃ project, which emphasizes the indigenous history of the northwest Amazon region. He is currently the UK lead for the Voices Indigenous Amazonia project, part of the Amazon+10 initiative that partners Brazilian and UK institutions. Additionally, he conducts an Archaeological Micromorphology Intensive course during UCL's Term 2 Reading week and welcomes PhD and Postdoc inquiries in South American Archaeology, Historical Ecology, Niche Construction, and Geoarchaeology.
