Biography

Manuel Castells is a leading scholar in globalization, network society, and internet studies. He holds the Wallis Annenberg Chair at USC Annenberg and has joint appointments in the Department of Sociology, School of Policy, Planning and Development, and School of International Relations. Prior to joining USC in 2003, Castells was a professor at the University of California, Berkeley, and also directed the Institute of Sociology and New Technologies at the Universidad Autonoma de Madrid from 1988 to 1993. He has held prestigious positions such as director of the Internet Interdisciplinary Institute at the Open University of Catalonia and has been a distinguished visiting professor at institutions like MIT and Oxford University. Castells has lectured at over 300 academic institutions across 46 countries and has received numerous awards for his contributions, including the 2013 Balzan Prize and the 2012 Holberg International Memorial Prize.
