Biography

Mara Loveman is a political historical sociologist with broad interests that encompass ethnoracial politics, nationalism, and state dynamics. Her research involves comparative historical sociology and political sociology, particularly focusing on the intricate relationships of race and nation in the context of Latin America. Additionally, her work delves into biopolitics and necropolitics, as well as the political economy of development, examining themes of difference and inequality through a sociological lens. Since joining the Sociology Department at the University of California, Berkeley in Fall 2013, Loveman has held various leadership roles, including Chair of the Sociology Department from 2015 to 2018 and again from 2020 to the present. She previously chaired the Department of Demography from 2003 to 2013 and was a faculty member at the University of Wisconsin-Madison prior to her current position. Loveman's educational background includes an M.A. and Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of California, Los Angeles, as well as a B.A. in Political Economy of Industrial Societies and Latin American Studies from UC Berkeley, where her studies also encompassed Spanish and Portuguese language.
