Biography

Marc Baggelaar is an Assistant Professor of Biomolecular Sciences at Utrecht University. His research focuses on the application of mass spectrometry and proteomics in chemical biology, specifically investigating post-translational modifications (PTMs) of proteins. He is particularly interested in the role of long-chain S-acylation (S-palmitoylation) and its impact on the human proteome, which is estimated to be influenced by up to 15% by reversible lipid PTMs. Baggelaar is developing innovative methods to study the scope of enzymatic regulation of these modifications, with a main focus on their role in neurodegenerative diseases and cancer. He is part of the Biomolecular Mass Spectrometry Proteomics group, embedded within the Bijvoet Centre for Biomolecular Research at Utrecht University.
