Biography

Marc-François Bernier is a Full Professor at the University of Ottawa. From 2008 to 2014, he held the Research Chair in Journalism Ethics. With nearly 20 years of experience as a journalist, primarily covering municipal and provincial politics in Quebec, he has actively participated in numerous professional debates and co-authored the Code of Ethics for the Quebec Professional Journalists Federation. He is the author of several works on journalism, including 'Journalists in the Land of Convergence: Serenity, Discomfort, and Distress in the Profession' (2008), 'Ethics and Journalism Ethics' (1994, 2004, 2014), 'The Ombudsman of Radio-Canada: Protector of the Public or Journalists?' (2005), and 'The Ghosts of Parliament: The Use of Anonymous Sources by Parliamentary Correspondents' (2001). He also serves as an expert witness in civil court cases related to ethics, journalism ethics, and sociology. Bernier regularly engages in public debates about journalism and the media, advocating for a critical approach that balances press freedom with accountability. Additionally, he authored bestsellers such as 'Foglia l'Insolent' (2015) and 'Jean-Pierre Ferland: A Bit High, A Bit Far' (2012). In 2018, he edited the collective work 'The Fifth Power: The New Accountability of Media to Their Audiences'.
