Biography

Marc Bierkens is a Professor of Earth Surface Hydrology at Utrecht University and a researcher at Deltares. His research primarily focuses on global hydrology, with a particular emphasis on groundwater depletion, water scarcity, and hydrological modeling at a global scale. He is a fellow of the American Geophysical Union and an elected member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences. As a member of the European Geosciences Union and the International Association of Hydrological Sciences, he contributes significantly to the field. His work highlights the challenges of sustainable water management, especially in light of climate change affecting water availability. Bierkens has guided 36 completed PhD theses and has been involved in more than 100 committees. He has published extensively with over 300 publications, including more than 240 in international peer-reviewed journals. His books include "Upscaling and Downscaling Methods for Environmental Research" and "Sampling for Natural Resource Monitoring." He completed his MSc in Hydrology at Wageningen University and earned his PhD in Physical Geography from Utrecht University. He has held several prominent roles within the university, including chairman of the Department of Physical Geography and vice dean of research in the Faculty of Geosciences.
