Biography

Marc Chevrette is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Plant Pathology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. His research primarily focuses on secondary metabolism and its relationship to interspecies interactions. He studies the evolution of microbial genomes, particularly the diversity and distribution of biosynthetic gene clusters (BGCs) and the enzymes they encode. His work includes genome mining and the development of computational tools to identify and characterize BGCs across various microbial species. He is also involved in the ancestral reconstruction of biosynthetic domains and pathways, and explores the evolutionary dynamics of enzyme specificity and promiscuity within natural systems. His lab investigates several experimental systems, including host-associated microbiomes like amphibian skin and insect exoskeletons, as well as soil bacteria within the rhizosphere. Additionally, he researches the genetic regulatory mechanisms that govern secondary metabolite expression and their interactions within synthetic microbial communities.
