Biography

Marc De Graef is the John Claire Bertucci Distinguished Professor of Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University, where he serves as the Faculty Director of the Materials Characterization Facility. He received his B.S. and M.S. degrees in Physics from the University of Antwerp in Belgium in 1983, followed by a Ph.D. in Physics from the Catholic University of Leuven in Belgium in 1989, with a thesis focusing on copper-based shape memory alloys. De Graef spent a half year as a postdoctoral researcher in the Materials Department at the University of California, Santa Barbara, before joining Carnegie Mellon University in 1993 as an assistant professor. His research interests include materials characterization and microscopy. He has received numerous awards, including the Carnegie Mellon George T. Ladd Research Award, and has been recognized as a fellow by the Microscopy Society of America and the TMS. He was appointed as the John Claire Bertucci Distinguished Professor in Engineering in 2023. His work encompasses significant contributions to the field of materials science and engineering, particularly in developing software that aids materials scientists globally. He actively participates in academic conferences and collaborates on various research projects that support advancements in the area of materials characterization and analysis.
