Dr. Marc Farrant

Biography

Marc Farrant is a faculty member in the Department of Humanities at the University of Amsterdam, specializing in English language and culture. His scholarly work revolves around the relationship between aesthetics and politics in the 20th and 21st centuries, focusing on the social and philosophical uses of cultural literary practices and literary theory. He has extensive teaching experience across the UK, Germany, and the Netherlands, having previously taught at institutions such as the University of London, University of Bonn, and University of Düsseldorf. Farrant's research interests encompass Global Anglophone and World Literatures, Modern and Contemporary Literature, Literary Cultural Theory, Literature and Philosophy, and the dynamics of Liberalism in contemporary literary culture. His current research project investigates the crisis of contemporary liberalism and its implications on literary practice. Farrant's PhD work examined the influence of modernist aesthetics on contemporary literature, particularly the works of Samuel Beckett and J.M. Coetzee. He has published articles in academic journals as well as literary reviews, and he serves as a co-convenor for a reading group focused on aesthetics and politics. He is also a fellow of the Higher Education Academy in the UK and teaches literary cultural theory at Amsterdam University College.
