Biography

Marc Domingo Gygax's principal interests lie in Hellenistic History, the history of classical Athens, archaic Greece, Greek Epigraphy, and the intersection of ancient and modern Philosophy. Since joining the Princeton faculty in 2002, he has taught at the University of Tübingen (1997-2002) and held a Fulbright post-doctoral fellowship at the University of California, Berkeley (1994-1995). He studied Ancient History and Archaeology, receiving his Licentiate from the University of Barcelona in 1988 and a PhD in 1993, along with a Master’s degree from the University of Tübingen in 1990. His book, "Untersuchungen zu den lykischen Gemeinwesen klassischer und hellenistischer Zeit," explored the origins of the city-state in Lycia and argued for continuities between Lycian society in the Classical and Hellenistic periods. His research on honorific inscriptions and public benefactors focuses on their central importance in understanding Greek euergetism and the dynamics of city-states. Domingo Gygax is also interested in the long-term study of history, recognizing patterns and structures that shape human action. He has published articles on various topics related to Greek gift-exchange reciprocity and has been supported by fellowships from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, the Fulbright Commission, and others. His teaching interests include undergraduate and graduate courses on Hellenistic History, Greek democracy, and Roman history, and he is affiliated with the Program in Hellenic Studies and the Princeton Institute for International and Regional Studies (PIIRS).
