Biography

Marc Hanvelt is an Associate Professor in the Department of Political Science at Carleton University, specializing in modern political thought, particularly the Scottish Enlightenment and the works of David Hume. He holds a BA and MA from the University of British Columbia and a PhD in political theory from the University of Toronto. Hanvelt has conducted extensive research into the history of political thought, focusing on Hume's contributions to liberal democratic theory. He is the author of "Politics Eloquence: David Hume’s Polite Rhetoric" published by University of Toronto Press in 2012 and is currently completing a manuscript exploring Hume’s account of political courage. Additionally, he is co-editing a forthcoming critical edition of Hume’s "History of England" for Oxford University Press. His selected publications include contributions to various scholarly texts on Hume's principles and the political dynamics of his time.
