Biography

Marc Lauxtermann is the Stavros Niarchos Foundation – Bywater Sotheby Professor of Byzantine Modern Greek Language and Literature and a Fellow at Exeter College, University of Oxford. He has extensively researched Byzantine poetry, particularly focusing on metre, and has co-edited a book on the letters of Psellos. His further research interests encompass translations of oriental tales, the formation of the earliest grammars and dictionaries in vernacular Greek, and the cultural dynamics of Byzantine literature. In his teaching, he covers a broad range of subjects including the history of the Greek language, Greek linguistics, and literature from the medieval to early modern periods. His publications are numerous and include critical studies on Byzantine poetry, explorations of language and education in Venice during the sixteenth century, and overviews of private libraries in Constantinople. Lauxtermann’s work significantly contributes to understanding the complexities of Byzantine literary culture and the evolution of Greek linguistic traditions in historical contexts.
