Biography

Marc received MSc and PhD degrees in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Twente, Netherlands. His PhD thesis focused on Abrasive Tool Wear in Metal Forming Processes. After completing his degree, he worked at the R&D centre of Hydro Aluminium, where he investigated the surface quality of aluminium extrusions. In 2006, he returned to Twente as a lecturer, initiating research in biotribology. Marc joined Imperial College London in 2013, where his main research areas include Tribology of Human Tissue, Tribology of Elastomers and Polymers, Wear Prevention, and Wear Mechanisms. His recent work involves developing analytical models for contact friction behaviour of compliant, visco-elastic materials and investigating wear behaviour of Ultra-High-Molecular-Weight Polyethylene (UHMWPE) used in implants. He has designed a novel portable tribometer to aid in the development of statistical models of friction forces in human skin contacts, and is currently leading a research project involving engineers and clinicians to establish relationships between friction and shear forces in the development of pressure ulcers.
