Dr. Marc Prentki

Biography

Marc Prentki is a full professor at the Faculty of Medicine at the Université de Montréal. His research focuses on signal transduction, specifically in the context of pancreatic β-cell regulation and insulin secretion. He investigates glucose metabolism and the metabolic pathways that influence insulin secretion, particularly in the context of type 2 diabetes. His laboratory studies the identification of metabolic factors involved in linking glucose metabolism to insulin secretion and uses various molecular biology techniques to explore the role of key enzymes in this regulation. He also examines the nutritional and genetic defects that lead to Type 2 diabetes and the mechanisms through which glucotoxicity and lipotoxicity impact pancreatic function. Prentki has supervised numerous graduate students and has worked on various research projects aimed at understanding the metabolic and molecular underpinnings of diabetes and obesity. He has been involved in significant research studies that explore the connections between dietary factors and cancer risk, particularly how high-fat diets may influence the development of specific cancers. Throughout his career, he has contributed extensively to the fields of biochemistry and molecular biology, helping to elucidate the critical connections between nutrition, metabolism, and disease.
