Biography

Researcher, professor, and intellectual in every sense of the word, Marcel Fournier has dedicated his career to sociology. Beginning over 40 years ago, his work has profoundly impacted this discipline both in Quebec and internationally. He joined the Department of Sociology at the Université de Montréal as an assistant professor in 1974, eventually becoming an associate professor and then a full professor in 1986. As a researcher, he has made significant contributions to the fields of theory and history of French sociology, as well as sociology of culture and sciences. His exceptional academic output includes 30 books and 150 articles. The publication of intellectual biographies of two major pioneers of anthropology and sociology in France, Émile Durkheim and Marcel Mauss, has established him as an internationally recognized specialist in the French school of sociology. Recently, the Université de Bordeaux announced that it would award him an honorary doctorate, confirming the strong symbolic lineage between Fournier and the founder of modern sociology, Émile Durkheim. His constant engagement in advancing the discipline is also reflected in his active participation in scholarly networks and international cooperation programs, as well as his leadership of the prestigious journal Sociologie et sociétés.
