Biography

Marcel Mayor, originally from Zurich, Switzerland, studied chemistry at the University of Berne, obtaining his diploma in 1991 and completing his dissertation in 1995 under the direction of Professors Rolf Scheffold and Lorenz Walder. He held a Postdoctoral Fellowship with the Swiss National Science Foundation at the Laboratoire de Chimie Supramoléculaire, Université Louis Pasteur in Strasbourg, working on the design and synthesis of reducible cryptatium compounds. Mayor then continued his research at the same institute, focusing on molecular wires. He served as a Maître de Confèrence invité at the Collège de France in Paris during 1997-1998. In 1998, he became a research group leader at the Institute of Nanotechnology at Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe GmbH. In recognition of his work, he received the Erwin Schrödinger Award in 2004 for collaborative research in the area of Molecules for Future Nanoelectronics. Mayor was an associate professor of chemistry at the University of Basel from 2005 until 2011, when he became a full professor. In the same year, he was appointed a member of the research council of the Swiss National Research Foundation and the research dean of the faculty of natural sciences at the University of Basel.
