Biography

Marcel Pieterse is an Associate Professor at the University of Twente, specializing in Health Psychology within the section of Psychology, Health & Technology. He graduated with a Master's degree in Health Promotion from Maastricht and completed his PhD research at the University of Twente, focusing on the design, testing, and implementation of brief smoking cessation interventions for general practitioners. Returning to the University of Twente in 2002 as an assistant professor, he moved through various roles in departments related to marketing communication and consumer psychology, ultimately specializing in addictive behaviors including tobacco, alcohol, and gaming. His recent projects include the development and evaluation of eHealth interventions for addiction treatment and cognitive bias modification techniques to address addictive behaviors. He conducts fundamental research on the determinants of addictive behaviors and strives to understand the physical and psychological predictors of relapse in alcohol addiction treatment. He teaches various modules in Health Psychology and Advanced Research Methods and has received multiple grants to support his research endeavors in public health and addiction prevention.
