Biography

Professor Marcel M.M. Verbeek is a leading researcher in the field of neurochemistry, with a particular focus on neurodegenerative disorders such as Parkinson's disease and Alzheimer's disease. His work emphasizes the study of pathophysiological mechanisms underlying cerebrovascular amyloid formation and the aggregation of disease-related proteins, as well as their interactions with cerebral cells and clearance pathways of proteins in the brain. He is involved in collaborative research with the Parkinson Centre Nijmegen and the Radboud Alzheimer Centre, working with international researchers to identify and validate biomarkers from body fluids, especially cerebrospinal fluid, that can aid in the diagnosis and prognosis of these debilitating disorders. Professor Verbeek has led various significant research projects, including the ZonMW-Memorabel Program aimed at identifying novel biomarkers for Cerebral Amyloid Angiopathy (CAA), and has contributed to several initiatives investigating the dysfunction of Aβ clearance barriers in Alzheimer’s disease.
