Dr. Marcello Distasio

Biography

Marcello DiStasio is a neuropathologist researcher at Yale School of Medicine, specializing in neuroimmunology. His background includes electrophysiology, biomedical engineering, and neural interface systems. His research focuses on understanding diseases of the central nervous system, particularly motor system diseases and cancer. He is dedicated to advancing techniques in computational pathology to improve the understanding and diagnosis of various diseases. His work involves the application of machine learning, image analysis, and statistical methods to histological and genomic data to characterize and classify tumors. DiStasio develops software to analyze histologic images from routine clinical evaluations, employing statistical machine learning techniques to explore patterns in cell morphology that correspond to genetic profiles of tissues. He believes that simultaneous genotypic and phenotypic characterization of tumors can enhance our understanding of neuropathology, neurobiology, cancer immunology, and the interactions within the CNS microenvironments, ultimately aiding in the prediction and explanation of pathological processes affecting the brain, retina, spinal cord, and peripheral nervous system.
