Dr. Marcelo Epstein

Biography

Marcelo Epstein is a Professor in the Department of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering at the Schulich School of Engineering, University of Calgary, where he has been since 1983. He holds dual degrees in Classics and Civil Engineering, with a PhD from the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology. His research interests focus on the mechanics of materials, with a strong emphasis on continuum mechanics, material modeling, and the underlying mathematical frameworks. Professor Epstein's work is widely recognized, reflected in numerous awards like the Frank Spragins Technical Award and the Tullio Levi-Civita Award. He has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals, contributing to areas like biomechanical modeling, the geometry of materials, and complex systems. Over his distinguished career, he has supervised 25 graduate students and is actively involved in curriculum development, including establishing innovative courses. His academic leadership includes several key roles such as Adjunct Professor in the Faculty of Humanities and Faculty of Kinesiology at U of C, and he has held the position of University Professor of Rational Mechanics. Professor Epstein is also noted for his significant contributions to interdisciplinary education, particularly through courses that make classical languages accessible to science students. Additionally, he engages in outreach, presenting internationally on the applications of mathematical methods in engineering and delivers keynotes at conferences.
