Prof. Gottschalk was born and raised in Buenos Aires, Argentina, where he obtained his veterinary diploma. He arrived in Canada in 1987 and obtained his Ph.D. in Microbiology and Immunology from the University of Montreal. In 2002, he became a full professor in the Department of Pathology and Microbiology of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Montreal. He has received eight national and international research awards for his work, and in 2018, he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate from Ghent University in Belgium, recognizing his outstanding career. Prof. Gottschalk is the director of the North American reference laboratory for swine pleuropneumonia caused by Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae and Streptococcus suis. He serves as a consultant for the FAO regarding human and swine diseases caused by S. suis. Prof. Gottschalk is recognized globally, ranking in the top 0.03% of published authors on Streptococcal infections in veterinary and human medicine. He has published over 400 articles in peer-reviewed journals and has contributed to over 200 articles in professional journals, serving as an invited speaker at more than 300 conferences across 36 countries.
