Biography

Marcelo Nobrega is the A.N. Pritzker Professor in the Department of Human Genetics at the University of Chicago. His research focuses on mechanistically deciphering the impact of genetic variation on the risk of human diseases. Dr. Nobrega is particularly interested in understanding noncoding genetic variants identified through Genome-wide Association Studies (GWAS) that are associated with disease etiology. His work operates on the underlying assumption that the majority of these variants affect the quantitative, temporal, and spatial properties of long-range cis-regulatory enhancers. He addresses various challenges in GWAS follow-up, which include identifying causal variants linked to disease traits, characterizing the spatial and temporal properties of enhancers, and establishing the differential regulatory properties of allelic variants. His lab develops integrated experimental and computational strategies to uncover the mechanisms linking regulatory variants to human disease and has made significant contributions to understanding how dietary factors affect gene regulation, as well as the genetic underpinnings of metabolic conditions.
